City of Helsinki

City of Helsinki is a pocket sized metropolis with 560 000 inhabitants. Out of the work force over third is working with public services. City of Helsinki alone employs almost 40 000 persons.

The main task of the city is to safeguard the well-being of its citizens. This is achieved through investments in long-term competitiveness and in inspiring innovation environment. According to the vision for Helsinki Region, the metropolitan area is a dynamic world-class centre for business and innovation. Its high-quality services, arts and science, creativity and adaptability promote the prosperity of its citizens and bring benefits to all Finland.

The City of Helsinki was closely involved in the process of creating Innovation Strategy for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. It participates in implementing the goals of the four pillar strategy: 1) to improve the international appeal of research and expertise, 2) to reinforce knowledge-based clusters and creating common development platforms 3) to reform and make innovation in public services, and 4) to support innovative activities in general.

There are seven business incubators based in Helsinki, which are either supported by the city or are part of the organisation. These are Helsinki Business and Science Park (biotechnology), New Business Center (software, content production), Arabus (design, new media), Travel park (tourist services), Amiedu and Twin BIC (technology, Russian and Baltic Co-operation). NYP Business Services, which focuses on Immigrant Entrepreneurship, functions as part of the City of Helsinki Business Development Unit.
