Technology Foundation Berlin

Technology Foundation Berlin

The TSB technology foundation is a Berlin centre of innovation.
Research results from Berlin have always influenced societal and economic developments. The development of the pill on the basis of hormone research in Berlin can be mentioned as only one example. This still applies today. The city must use the available knowledge of its various and richly endowed scientific communities and in this way tap future potential. TSB sees itself as duty-bound to fulfill the task of sponsoring applications-oriented science.

In order not to try to do too many things at once, TSB has developed a competency strategy. Its motto is: enhance assets and sponsor technology sectors in which Berlin is already leading the pack. TSB supports selected technology sectors mainly through networking. Here science and small and medium-sized companies are brought together and moderated for innovative projects. The success of these activities is shown by the fact that with OpTecBerlin-Brandenburg, BioProfile (,  "xmlcity:berlin" ( and the application centre intermodal traffic telematics (, in 2001 alone four of the networks initiated by TSB were nationally successful against the competition and were honored by the Minister for Education and Research. Also BioHyTec (, which is adviced by TSB now, was among the winners in 2001.
The strategy to concentrate on competency centers is also supported by the future fund ( of the Berlin region, whose organizational base is at the technology foundation. The future fund was financed from the revenue of the privatization of the Berlin water authority. It mainly sponsors projects from sectors defined as competency centers which were recommended for this by an independent and top flight advisory committee.

With regular technology sector analysis, TSB observes the city’s scientific landscape and makes sure that trends with a promising future are quickly taken up and can be developed in an application-oriented way. TSB also provides at numerous events a dialogue forum for scientific topics and with Berliner WissensWerte offers to the wider public information from the city’s scientific and research community.
