Malmö

Malmö is the commercial centre of southern Sweden and an international city. This is expressed, not least, by the fact that Malmö has 271 000 residents who speak some 100 languages and belong to 164 different nationalities.

Heavy investments in new technology and training programmes of high calibre have made Malmö a city of knowledge. Malmö University, which opened in 1998, is Sweden's latest venture in the field of higher education, accommodating some 15 000 students.

The strongest sectors in Malmö are logistics, retail and wholesale trade, construction, and property. There are also a number of well-known companies within biotechnology and medical technology, environmental technology, IT, and digital media fields. Co-operation between colleges, science parks (Medeon), incubators (Minc), and companies provides a sound basis for entrepreneurs and creative development in Malmö.

An exceptionally well developed infrastructure makes Malmö very easy to reach, whatever means of transport you use to get here: boat, plane, train or car. Malmö has an international harbour and the airports Kastrup and Sturup are only half an hour's journey from the centre of Malmö. The motorway reaches right into the city centre and Malmö has excellent rail connections with the rest of Sweden and Europe.

The City of Malmö is enhancing an attractive business environment and a dynamic business community in Malmö. The City of Malmö is actively involved in the development of the Øresund Science Region together with the universities and business sector.

The Øresund Region

The Øresund Region is a dynamic and rapidly developing region in Europe. The area generates a quarter of the combined GDP of Sweden and Denmark. The two sides of the region are connected by the Øresund Bridge – the fixed link between Copenhagen and Malmö – and by ferries sailing the route between Helsingborg and Helsingör.

The Øresund Region is easily accessible from all parts of the globe. Copenhagen international airport is one of the largest airports in Northern Europe and operates direct flights to more than 120 destinations. Within the Øresund Region itself, journey times are short thanks to the extensive investments made in good infrastructure.

The Øresund Region features a blend of proximity to both big city environments – with their ethnic and cultural variety – and relaxing countryside with beaches, forests, hills and open landscapes.

The Øresund region includes Zealand, Loland-Falster Møn and Bornholm in Denmark and Skåne in Sweden. The region is home to 3.6 million people.

The Øresund Region is home to a large concentration of highly educated people and a number of innovative environments. The workforce is 1.8 million people and constitutes the large recruitment base. The region boasts a well-developed working relationship between industry, higher education establishments and the authorities. There are 14 universities and colleges with 140 000 students and more than 10 000 researchers.

The Øresund Region is a hub for high-tech companies and research organisations. The clusters which are especially strong are pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, IT and telecommunication, food, environment, logistics and design. There are six research parks and 11 university hospitals.
