Stockholm

The City of Stockholm is the capital of and a major political, academic and business centre in Northern Europe . It is also the centre of the country’s biggest functional region, the Stockholm-Mälar region.

The population of Stockholm-Mälar Region is 2.7 million and the surface area 36 500 sq. km. In the region there are 30 higher educational institutions (HEI) with 110 000 students, and six science parks.

Generating one third of the country’s economic growth, the region is ranked as one of the world’s foremost knowledge-based economies. It has outstanding institutions for research and development with important clusters in the fields of ICT and biotechnology, and well-established, diversified and future-oriented industry. The share of the region's working age population with tertiary education is almost 40 percent.

The annual Nobel Prize ceremonies are an important and integrated part of Stockholm ’s scientific profile, providing a scientific brand of global reach, and attracting qualified scientists to Stockholm .

City of Stockholm is actively involved in the development of an attractive environment for innovative companies and R&D institutions.
