The City of Stockholm is the capital of and a major political, academic and business centre in Northern Europe . It is also the centre of the country’s biggest functional region, the Stockholm-Mälar region.

The population of Stockholm-Mälar Region is 2.7 million and the surface area 36 500 sq. km. In the region there are 30 higher educational institutions (HEI) with 110 000 students, and six science parks.

Generating one third of the country’s economic growth, the region is ranked as one of the world’s foremost knowledge-based economies.
